Foul on the Play…or Not? admin Tuesday, October 6, 2009 The Game The NFL says it was a violation of the rules. Oakland Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson says it was a violation of his religion. Here’s what happened…. During Sunday’s game, after picking off a pass in the end zone, Johnson celebrated his interception by dropping to his knees and raising his arms in triumph. Instantly he was flagged and hit with a conduct penalty for excessive celebration. About his actions, Johnson said, “I’m just getting on my knees giving my respect to God. I don’t see how that’s a personal foul or anything like that.” But for the NFL…rules are rules and this particular one has been since it was instituted in 2006. The rule prohibits players from using foreign objects or the ball while celebrating and from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground. So it looks like the officials were right…Foul on the Play. We don’t knock him for getting his praise on! We do suggest though that the next time he decides to on the field, it needs to be in the form of a spike, dunk, Lambeau Leap, spin or a dance because those are allowed. Go figure!!! (Source1,2)
