Why don’t Americans like Soccer? admin Tuesday, June 29, 2010 The Game by J. Darien Stokes I was thinking maybe because it’s usually a lot of movement but not much scoring. But that’s not true, we love hockey; at least in certain areas. I tried watching a few games and thought maybe it’s too boring, but then again we watch baseball endlessly. As I did my research a couple of things became blatantly obvious. First there is no room for a “new sport”. We are so consumed with football first followed by basketball, baseball, and lastly hockey that we just don’t have time for soccer. So instead it competes with the other red-headed step children of sports in the U.S. ESPN airs more billiards and women’s softball games than they do soccer with the exception of when the World Cup comes around. The 2nd reason is Americans created the three major sports and imported hockey from our next door neighbor Canada. Soccer on the other hand was created in ancient China during 2nd and 3rd century BC. A version was played by the Romans also. So at the end of the day soccer will have to be satisfied with being the world’s favorite sport and a side note to the U.S. (Pic)
