When the 13-minute trailer of “All My Babies’ Mamas” hit the internet, it didn’t take long for the news to spread like wild fire.  The now controversial reality show pilot, featuring Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo, is a hot topic because of his 11 kids and 10 baby mamas.  The idea of promoting parental irresponsibility and/or glorifying unprotected sex has proven to be too much for some to handle. So much so, an online petition started on Change.org, in which approx 40,000 signatures were collected.

Well, the outrage from the public caused the Oxygen network to pull the plug on the project.  But, why did they?  Could 40K signatures change the mind of the producers/executives at Oxygen?  Since the creation of their hit show “Bad Girls Club”, Oxygen has garnered millions of viewers. These aren’t viewers who tuned in each week to see a wholesome caddy-free show about young girls. Instead, people who watch BGC enjoy the ratchet behavior. They get a kick out of seeing the girls dress provocatively, slug it out in fights, and oftentimes curse one another out.  The reality is that millions of people are entertained by this! But, is “All My Babies’ Mamas” worse than BGC?

Year-after-year, controversial reality shows are aired that ruffles feathers (i.e. Honey Boo Boo, Love & Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, etc).  But, no level of backlash has caused these shows to be canceled.  In my opinion, it is unfair to prevent Shawty Lo’s show from airing.  As explained in his interview with HLN’s Showbiz Tonight, Shawty Lo has not had a kid in 10 years.  All 11 of his children were birthed during his younger (and reckless) days.  He was a product of his Bankhead roots. His mom was on crack. His dad wasn’t present in the home. The grandmother that raised him passed away when he was a teenager. So, he had a lot of things lined up against him which prevented him from receiving the appropriate guidance.  Eventually, he changed his life for the positive. He became the CEO of D4L Records and has been financially able to care for all of his kids (and some of the mothers).  So, how can you fault a man for taking care of his family and wanting to show his reality on television? This could be an outlet for his family to make some extra cash.  You mean, society has stooped so low to want to stop a man from making a honest living!  For Oxygen to cancel his show, in my opinion, is ridiculous!
