You’re Fired: Food Network Says “No More” to Paula Deen Ms. Bels Monday, June 24, 2013 The Script, Tune In In a matter of two weeks, the life of Paula Deen is no longer as peachy clean as it once was. The caucasian “Mother of Southern Soul Food” received an enormous amount of backlash after court proceedings revealed her past use of various racial slurs and offensive comments. Deen’s reputation quickly dwindled once word got out about the deposition given during the discrimination lawsuit filed by an former employee. Apparently, the outpour of disgruntled fans and network supporters has now caused the Food Network to officially announce Deen’s seperation. The 66-year old cooking goddess became a fixture on the Food Network in 2002. Her career has spanned over ten years and has captivated cooks and southern food lovers from all over the world. She’s a household name and businesswoman who has made thousands of dollars doing what she loves. The unfortunate circumstances surrounding her use of racial slurs came as a surprise to many. But for some, no surprise at all because of her upbringing in the South. The Food Network dissapproves of the offensive language and negative effects Deen’s character can potentially have on the network. “Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month,” the statement said. Network representatives declined further comment. In hopes to quickly do damage control, Deen released a series of Youtube videos claiming her innocence of being deemed a bigot. “Inappropriate, hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable,” Deen said in the first 45-second video posted on YouTube. “I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way but I beg you, my children, my team, my fans, my partners – I beg for your forgiveness.” Take a listen to one of her viral apologies… Do you believe her? Do you think that Deen’s apology is sincere? Although racism is not felt, seen, or heard outright as it once was here in America, underhandedly it still exist. Being from the South, you get to hear and experience it much more than someone who may have grown up up North. It is a deeply rooted culture and way of life for a lot of White southerns that may never ever go away. Most of the southern states were the last states to abolish slavery, but conservatism still resides in many households. This upbringing only rekindles the hate and bigotry from generation to generation. Paula Deen is a product of that type of household, clearly. She believes the little racial remarks she says are only jokes. She’s unaware that her comments can be miscontrued or misinterpreted by the other race. This is where her lack of education and tactfulness is made apparent. And for her to be an employeer using racial slurs is way beyond comprehension. No ethical tact at all. Deen should be highly ashamed of herself. Good for the Food Network. They made the best decision.
