You can’t always speak your mind and not have to suffer the consequences. Roy Hibbert, center for the Indiana Pacers, learned the hard way after game 6 against the Miami Heat. In a post-game interview, Hibbert responded to a reporters question a regarding the defensive tactics against Lebron James. At the end of his statement, he said “no homo.” Additionally, the star player used profanity during his interview when asked why he ranked so low for Defensive Player of the Year. However, it wasn’t the profanity that struck a cord with the NBA. But regretting his choice of words, Hibbert issued a formal apology. “I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during the postgame press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night,” Hibbert said in the statement released by the Pacers. “They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization.” Unfortunately, his apology was not effective enough for the league. Commissioner David Stern and the NBA felt as though the use of offensive language was inappropriate and not a good representation of what the association is all about.
