The H.B.I.C.of the Bossette movement, Lola Monroe, released a highly anticipated mixtape last week. Lipstick and Pistols, hosted by DJ ill Will, is Lola’s first project after separating ties with Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang label. No hard feelings though claims Lola. The business friendship developed by the two is still intact and it’s nothing but love. Having heard about her rise to this point, it is evident that Lola Monroe likes to leave the chartering of her career in her own hands.

Since 15, she’s been maneuvering through this streets. One thing you can hear in her music is struggle. This is what I appreciate about her music. Lola is able to make street lyrics you’d normally hear from a dude, sound sexy and comparable to the lives of other females who has had to force their own way in this male dominated world. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard a female make being “hard” an acceptable feminine characteristic. She does this quite well.

Lola Monroe, however, will be separated from the pack by her rap delivery. She has created her own style.  Admittedly, she has confirmed that her lover King Los taught her how to rap. For those who have a problem with it, oh well. Lola has clearly learned from one of the best and is a lyrical beast in her own right. You can witness this on this new project, Lipsticks and Pistols.

The 16-song mixtape is a good look for Lola Monroe. She’s spitting and is giving us a variety of sounds to show that she has the ability to become commercial, if need be.  In case you’ve never heard her before, now is the best opportunity.
