The Good, the Bad & the REALLY of 2014 Grammy Awards: Fashion, Performances & Winners Ms. Bels Monday, January 27, 2014 The Script, Tune In The 56th annual Grammy Awards show popped off Sunday night, on CBS, at 8pm. The annual awards show is the music industry’s most notable event that recognizes the best of the best in talent. Nominations are cast by a Grammy’s committee of privately selected peers. Then, nominees are drafted for various categories which range from the most coveted Album of the Year to Best Song Written for Visual Media. Grammy’s long list of categories surely can’t fit into a 3-hour televised program. Therefore, most category winners are announced prior to the actual live taping. This year was no different. Many of our favs won, while others were snubbed. Nevertheless, life goes on and there’s always next year! Anyhoo, let’s get straight to it… Performances, in my opinion, are really why people tune into the Grammy Awards. Let’s face it…who really cares about the winners except the winners (and their fans). LOL. Fashionistas, however, keep their eyes glued to the red carpet pre-show. This is when us viewers get to see our favorite artists strut their stuff in high-priced gowns, suits, diamonds, and flawless hair/makeup. But, don’t be surprised when you see a few “no ma’ams” or “no sirs” hit the red carpet. Social media surely knows how to have a field day with fashion #FAILs. So, for this years 56th Grammy Awards, here are my votes for “The Good, The Bad, & The REALLY?!!” of the night: THE GOOD When it came to “serving it”, the following artists brought their A-game. From head-to-toe, they were flawless (if not, at least close to it). Alicia Keys…WERK that blue dress boo! Madonna…she can NEVER do any wrong Faith Evans…looking good in all-black. the hair though…an Up-do was the better choice for dress neckline Ciara…absolutely flawless in this sequin joint; perfect for the baby bump Winners of the night that definitely deserved the golden Grammy were: Record of the Year: “Get Lucky” Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers Song of the year: “Royals” Joel Little & Ella Yelich O’Connor (Lorde) Best rap/sung collaboration: “Holy Grail” Jay Z featuring Justin Timberlake Best pop solo performance: “Royals” Lorde Best music video: “Suit and Tie,” Justin Timberlake Featuring Jay Z Producer of the year, non-classical: Pharrell Williams Best rap performance:“Thrift Shop,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz Best gospel song: “If He Did It Before . . . Same God [Live],” Tye Tribbett Best gospel album: “Greater Than [Live],” Tye Tribbett Best score soundtrack for visual media: “Skyfall,” Thomas Newman, composer Best song written for visual media: “Skyfall,” Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth Best R&B song: “Pusher Love Girl,” James Fauntleroy, Jerome Harmon, Timothy Mosley and Justin Timberlake Best urban contemporary album: “Unapologetic,” Rihanna Performance of the night, HANDS DOWN, goes to Pharell, Stevie Wonder & Daft Punk and their funk-driven “Get Lucky”. Peep the video below in case you missed it: THE BAD Sometimes our stylists don’t quite get it right. In the case of these two particular looks, the color RED was not a hit last night. Pink…I love me some Pink, but certain outfits exemplifies her ratchetness. Tamar Braxton…I don’t like the color red on her. Point blank period. And the hair was a little scruffy… Maybe if Pink and Tamar would have switch the color of their dresses, their looks would have worked better. I think with Tamar’s skin tone, she would have been flawless in a orange colored dress. Winners that just didn’t sit well with my stomach were: Best new artist: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis {This has to be strictly due to numbers. Kendrick Lamar should have won.} Best R&B album: “Girl On Fire,” Alicia Keys {The Grammys tried it! this was NOT Alicia’s best album; must be the numbers. I would have picked TGT’s “Three Kings”.} Best rap song: “Thrift Shop” Ben Haggerty & Ryan Lewis {This is the type of shenanigans that will make a person stop looking at this bias show! A$AP Rocky’s “F-n Problems and Drake’s “Started from the Bottom” were played everywhere, all the time. The radio stations kept these songs on rotation. So, how in the heck did “Thrift Shop” win a Grammy?!! It’s a conspiracy!} Best rap album: “The Heist,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis {SMH. Again, the rap category has been bamboozled. Macklemore can rap. I can’t take that from him. But, his rap talent and album was notbetter than Drake’s “Nothing Was the Same” nor Kendrick Lamar’s “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City”. On no level was Macklemore’s album “the best” in 2013.} The REALLY?!! Katy Perry…there is always one person who is going to bring uniqueness to the red carpet. She did it…and it worked surprisingly! Album of the Year went to Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories”. I never heard of them until the song they recorded with Pharrell. So I can’t give a legit opinion on the project as of yet. But, congratulations to them! However, the creme de la creme of talent didn’t come through as many of us expected. Beyonce’s opening act was not so grandioso. I’m not sure if she was nervous or just couldn’t keep up with the backing track. She was clearly lip-singing, which I don’t mind as long as you pull it off effortlessly. In Bey’s case, this wasn’t her best performance. Jay Z’s rap verse and the catchy “Drunk In Love” hook that America loves, both helped save the day. Sorry Beyonce…the album is still fire though!
