On Sunday (Jan 19), Detroit-native Mario Johnson celebrated the one year anniversary of his restaurant, MOJO’s Motown Eatery.  The event brought out several local celebrities, socialites, media, family and friends. In the building were Sharlinda and Sabrina Rowe, Khadijia Rowe, Yung L.A., Nicci Gilbert, Devin Michaels, and Jasijah just to name a few. Mario poured on the hospitality with never-ending food tastings. The drinks were flowing as well (courtesy of Exclusiv Vodka) along with  ATL Camera Man to keep the atmosphere festive. Additional sponsors included: Lush Cakes, PZI Jeans, Jay Productions, Reinchild PR, and Cupcake Sweet.

If you haven’t heard of MOJO’s, the quaint eatery is snuggled in the West End (a largely Black populated area within the Atlanta city limits). The West End area is pretty historical. It is home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s alma mater, Morehouse College. The all-female institution, Spelman, Clark-Atlanta University, and the now defunct Morris Brown College, are too, close in proximity. With the heavy student population and warmth of other mom-and-pop businesses nearby, MOJO’s Motown Eatery’s appreciation for history and culture has proved to be a great investment for the entrepreneur.

One of the main reasons the restaurant is going into their 2nd year of business is because of its signature burgers and hot wings. Johnson moved to Atlanta 3 years ago from the Motor City bringing his special recipes with him. In Detroit, he owned a carry-out location that garnered a lot of business. So, why not bring that Detroit flavor down south?! For starters, MOJO’s signature burgers offers quite a surprise when you take a bite.

“The specialty is the burger that you all had. It’s a stuffed cheeseburger. It has mushrooms, bacon, and cheese cooked on the inside of the burger. You can get it in beef or turkey. Also, we have catfish and then the wings. Honey Lemon Pepper and Hot Honey Lemon Pepper…those are our signature flavors. You now Atlanta is a hot wing city. So…,” said Mario Johnson, Owner.

And that’s accurate. When you cook hot wings in Atlanta, they better be good! Mario understands wholeheartedly and that’s why MOJO’s wings are said to be some of the best the West End has to offer.

Luckily, other areas of the city may soon get their chance to taste his great food. Mario says he plans to open a second location soon. He is also planning to franchise the business.  So, be on the look out for a MOJO’s Motown Eatery near you.
