SCAM ALERT: Red Light Cameras Lead to False Warrants & Money Lost admin Wednesday, January 22, 2014 The Receipt A scam involving an Alpharetta, Georgia police department has local residents up in arms. Apparently, several victims have come forth to file police reports about a person making false claims about their driving habits. In a recent article, authorities say that a gentlemen has made several calls to homes and accused residents of running a local red light. The man, who says he’s an Alpharetta police offer, then goes on to tell them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. In order to satisfy the warrant, the scammer requests that the person go to a store and load a certain amount of cash on a card. Once that is done, he insists that they give him the card number over the phone. Authorities says that their process to collect money for a red light citation does not operate that way. “At no time, will an Alpharetta police officer or any other public safety employee contact a person by telephone requesting money. No Alpharetta police officer would physically go to a residence or meet with any person in an effort to collect money,” George Gordon, Alpharetta Public Safety spokesman, said in the scam alert. The APD warned residents to jot down any pertinent information if they any calls of this nature. Then, go to your local police station and file a police report.
