I guess the purpose of Nicki Minaj recently taking out her weave to reveal her real hair (on Instagram) was to let us all know that she was going back to her roots. And in this new video, “Lookin’ A$$ Nigga” she does just that.

 

Nicki returns to her metaphor-heavy, hardcore street rap that once funneled through her music when she first started dropping mixtapes. Over the years, she went commercial/pop and a lot of her early fans turned their backs on her.  I can admit, I was one of them. When the singing and big colorful wigs and wild outfits came into play, I wasn’t feeling it. But my love for street rap is the reason why. I thought Nicki allowed the pomp and circumstance overpower the art. Not to say that she isn’t a dope artist, she is. She merely just lost her way…probably because of the business aspect of being in the entertainment. Who doesn’t want to get to the money?!

 

Anywhoo, the old Nicki is back and giving us life on her new video. The song, which will be featured on an upcoming compilation album, is a short 2 1/2 minute track with straight ether. She’s letting the fellas have it on this one. Which I don’t blame her, it’s about time a female artist put these ni**as in place. We’re tired of being womanized and undervalued. It’s time for women to take a stance and let it be known that we aren’t impressed by that “fake sh*t”.

 

So, kudos to Nicki…if her new album is going to be on this level, just let me know when the pre-order sales start. I’m definitely copping it!
