Well, according to a recent poll revealed by Amazon, several major cities didn’t even make the list.
An annual list posted on Amazon’s revealed that the city of Alexandria, Virginia is the best-read city in the U.S. This is Alexandria, VA’s third straight year winning the title. Amazon speculates that because of it’s location near the White House, Pentagon, and other government agencies, the people there frequently buy books, newspapers, magazines, etc.
The city to come in as No. 2 on the list was Miami. Amazon says residents there tend to purchase books on health, self-help, and mind and body related periodicals. The remaining cities that followed were:
3. Knoxville, Tennessee
4. Seattle, Washington
5. Orlando, Florida
6. Ann Arbor, Michigan
7. Berkley, California
8. Cambridge, Massachusetts
9. Cincinnati, Ohio
10. Columbia, South Carolina
11. St. Louis, Mo.
12. Pittsburgh, Penn.
13. Vancouver, Wash.
14. Salt Lake City, Utah
15. Atlanta, Ga.
16. Gainesville, Fla.
17. Dayton, Ohio
18. Clearwater, Fla.
19. Richmond, Va.
20. Tallahassee, Fla.
Some contribute the huge reader population to the student residents. Many of the cities listed above are home-base for large colleges and universities.
Unfortunately, New York City didn’t even make the Top 20. What’s really going on NJ/NY?!!
