Music Review: @LyricJones – Love’s Trail Mix

Much of urban music does not reflect the uncompromising premise of love. Hell, it has been documented that many R&B songs don’t deal with love as they used to. So you know rap songs do not either. The last R&B album that actually encompassed any amorous thematic scheme was Andre 3000’s The Love Below. Thus, love is something typically not touched in rap music.

So, if you are trying to avoid any love stories and how they do (or don’t) work out, then I would not suggest listening to Lyric Jones’s Love’s Trail Mix. However, if you DO want to hear about the nuances of relationships with different stories and situations then I would ask you to play this EP on repeat.

To make sure I clarify things, the album is titled the way it is due to the diverse amount of stories offered around love. For instance, “Tall” references a tome about a young man that she witness to become something more desirable and confident. Before, he was actually meek with low self-esteem. The only problem was that the song ended with her missing an opportunity. Therefore, Lyric Jones worked to make an album that people could connect to regardless of their feelings about love.

If one was to pay attention, much of the subject matter deals with love that actually goes wrong. “Off Limits” expresses the chagrin of having to catch feelings for someone that is already taken. “Tired” deals with the trials and tribulations of a relationship with its issues. The aforementioned song “Tall” deals with the art of missing out. As much as this album is about love, it is also about love being lost.

Even still, the entire EP is crafted with such care that is entirely expressed through its production. Every beat used on this project only works to enhance the mood of each theme and each word uttered by Lyric Jones. Another thing is this: there is no weak production. I would talk about each track, but that would do it no justice. Just know that the music is befitting to the lyrics.

Love’s Trail Mix is just that: a trail mix dealing with the different flavors of love. Much of it deals with a lot of failure in love, however. Still, that does not take away from the beauty of this project. Making a project dedicated to love does not happen often in hip hop. Yet, Lyric Jones did the unusual and made it attractively remarkable.
