HomeFeature#OnTheBlock: @IAmFlyTyy Speaks On 15 Yr Bid, The Road to Redemption & His Future In Music [VIDEO] Ms. Bels Friday, July 4, 2014 Feature, On The Block, Studio Xclusive, The Studio Fly Ty, a native of Jamaica Queens, NY, recently sat down with STACKS Magazine to share details about his life and music career. As a close affiliate to the Desert Storm/Street Fam organization, Fly Ty’s close ties has inspired him to take a once negative situation and turn it into a positive. After spending 15 years in federal prison for murder and attempted murder, Fly Ty is unique in that the system didn’t deter him from accomplishing things for himself. While serving time, he earned a GED and bachelors degree in Political Science. With the love and support from his lady, family, and close friends, Fly Ty’s transition from incarceration to freedom was quick. As the owner of Room Service Lounge club in Atlanta and Miami, Fly Ty has made great strides as an entrepreneur. But, it is the music and writing is where his passion lies. He reveals that it was a natural progression for him to dab into music and says its been very therapeutic for him over the years. “The music has always been a therapeutic outlet for me, you know. It’s been therapeutic. So, it was just like a natural progression for me to just get involved.” While incarcerated, Fly Ty was the first person to ever be on someone’s album from jail over the phone, which was courtesy of DJ Clue’s The Professional Part 2 on Roc-A-Fella Records. “DJ Clue was signed to Roc-A-Fella Records and he had dropped three albums (The Professional Part 1, The Professional Part 2, and The Professional Part 3). I was actually on the The Professional Part 2 and that was back in 2000. I recorded a song from jail over the phone call “Phone Patch.” I used Raekwon’s “Incarcerated Scarface” beat. So, I actually been rapping. I been playing with since as early as I can remember.” His recent single “Understand It” features Rocko and has been added to the countdown on Atlanta’s Streetz 94.5 and V103 and is in heavy rotation in the clubs. The single will be included on his upcoming My Life, Your Entertainment EP, which will also feature a new joint called “Smokin’ Mirrors” featuring Future and French Montana. Fly Ty has also worked with Juelz Santana, Cap 1, Tracy T, Future and Desert Storm affiliate, Fabulous. He attributes his motivation in music to artist/producer, Chubbie Baby, Rocko, and Meek Mill. Aside from the music and clubs, Fly Ty has also written two books. “A Basic Guide to Getting in the Rap Game” is a guide to help artists better understand legalities and the technical aspects of the music industry and the other is an inspirational book entitled, “Road to Redemption.” The book was written to help people make the right decisions in life. One good piece of advice he mentions in the music guidebook is the importance of having a good team. “Have a team around you that believes what you believe in and that sees your vision for what you want to see for your vision. Because when you got people around you like that, all they can do is contribute to the energy that’s already flowing and can’t nothing but great things come from that.” Fly Ty is a true testament to those who persevere through various trials and tribulations. His incarceration not only taught him a valuable lesson, but it also motivated him to become a positive member of society. As he states, “When you see me, what you see is what you get. My life is an open book. I got a history and I just hope that I’m not defined by my worst deed.” Follow Fly Ty on Twitter and Instagram @IAmFlyTYY.
