Music Review: GLC (@glctheism) – By Ism Means Necessary

GLC is probably one of the most consistent emcees on an independent level. While with Kanye, he made sure he kept himself in the interests of the music industry. When he left Good Music to live out his musical dreams, he kept making moves. He garnered underground features while mixtapes were reliably cranked out. By Ism Means Necessary, serving as the name of this mixtape, is the actual ideology that has served GLC’s efforts of efficiency.

The best thing about this mixtape is GLC’s willingness to delve into a diverse sound bed of influences and sampling for his game spitting. Sampling the Anna Kendrick track “Cups” actually works for the game that is laid on “Gone”. The DJ Deeon jukin’ jam sampling “Let Me Bang” screams “let me see your footwork” in the minds of those in the know. The slow rolling and funky guitar licks make “Fresh At My Funeral” great listening music. One of the best things about this mixtape, as a whole, is that every song does not sound the same.

Yet, there are some drawbacks for this composition. For one, some of the sound qualities of the songs are not on the same level. “Fuck Em All” sounds unfinished on the production end. Another drawback are the use of the interludes. While TatorChip Pimp is hilarious, the “Ain’t It Man Competition 2014” overextends its welcome. So, there are some drawbacks on this mixtape after a few listens.

Once again, GLC makes a mixtape filled of game spitting and good music. Some of the songs are actually great. Once he makes sure all of his songs are great, then we will see GLC shine like he deserves to. Still, he needs to make sure that his quality control is stronger. Once he makes sure the sound is equal with songs that push music to the edge of greatness, nothing will really be able to stop GLC or the Ism.
