In the late 80’s when hip hop became a true art form, female emcees emerged from the behind-the-curtain showcasing a level of talent that made the male-dominated industry think twice. MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, Queen Latifah, Lil Kim, and many others allowed their strength and skills shine through their rhymes. They were able to prove to the labels and their rap peers that women deserve to have a place on stages, tours, Billboard charts, and so on.

While there’s been women present in the rap game  for over two decades, there’s only been a handful that’s had the ability to professionally grow and reap the benefits of being labeled a “hip hop superstar.”  There’s been Queen Latifah, who has went on to become a household name in music, film, and television. Da Brat, aka the first lady of So So Def Records, made hip hop history as the first female rapper to ever go platinum. Eve was able to expand her music career into acting, television production and even owned a fashion line at one point. And probably the most rewarded female rapper thus far, Nicki Minaj, has shown us that female rappers can dominate the game and prosper into other areas of business.

Still, that’s only a few in hip hop.

Well, now there’s a crop of female emcees that are ready to take on the challenge and defeat the odds. On next Tuesday, August 12, “Sisterhood of Hip Hop” will premiere on the Oxygen channel. The show will follow the everyday grind of five female rappers who’s created a buzz, but requires mentorship and self-discipline in order to take their careers to the next level. Diamond (formerly of Crime Mob), Brianna Perry, Siya, Bia, and Nyemiah Supreme will confront their personal issues and tackle the scrutiny of the business.  They understand that their hunger to become superstars will come with adversities.

“Sisterhood of Hip Hop” is a step forward in the right direction. Although the internet and cult-like following allow female rappers to put their music out and engage with the fans, there just isn’t enough women in the national and international spotlight.  Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea are the only ones that truly has the world’s attention right now. To make the hip hop game balanced, however, it is imperative that our female artists are pushed to the forefront alongside their male counterparts.  Maybe this reality show will become that platform to do so.

Lastly, one question still remains. Do these five ladies have what it takes to become superstars? We shall see…

Tune in next Tuesday, 9:00PM Est!
