HomeFeatureIf It Weren’t For the Performances…+ 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards Winners Ms. Bels Wednesday, October 15, 2014 Feature, Film & Television, Tune In Last night, the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards aired featuring the hottest music and fashions from several of your favorite hip-hop artists. The awards show was filmed in Atlanta back in September. Many events took place that weekend surrounding the awards. Many, of which, STACKS Magazine was able to attend (check our homepage or search “Events” to see photos/videos). Unfortunately, BET didn’t grant our outlet media access again this year. I guess the didn’t appreciate my complaint email from 2013, so we’ve been blackballed. LOL oh well… Anyway, we will continue to support certain aspects of BET since they do, do a fairly good job at representing Black Entertainment. So, no love loss there. My Thoughts This year, Snoop Dogg returned to his hosting gig, which brought along an awkward white-faced character name Todd. Luckily for us viewers, Todd didn’t take up much air time. It was cool to see Nia Long do her thing alongside Snoop in the comedy skits. For majority of the awards show, let’s just say BET played it safe. Maybe I’m getting older and don’t get as hype as I would’ve 20 years ago. Kids and Black Twitter, however, probably got a kick out of this years line-up up performances. The ones that stood out, for me, were Rich Gang’s Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, Brandy’s “Wanna Be Down” classic with MC Lyte, Yo Yo, and Queen Latifah, Common and Jay Electronica, Dougie Fresh, and Bobby Schmurda. The performances are always tricky when it’s seen on TV. Either the artist(s) are over-hype and plain ole “doing too much” OR the audience just don’t seem that interested. There were one or two moments where the audience preferred to just stay in their seats and bob their heads periodically. But, did ya’ll see T.I.‘s performance?? T.I. was WAY more hype than Young Thug. T.I.’s performance, visually, was a little off-balance. Thankfully, “About the Money” topped the charts and the audience were definitely vibing off of it last night.
