HomeFeatureMusic Review: @DejLoaf – Sell Sole Mark Harris Monday, November 17, 2014 Feature, Music, The Studio Def Loaf is the “it artist” out right now. Out of nowhere, I was waking up to her single “Try Me”. And I mean, literally, as I got ready for work while MTV 2 blared it on the TV screen. The song – which deals with retribution, retaliation, and get back – is a winner. With all the success, there have to be a capitalization period. What better way to capitalize off of that progression than to drop a project. Thus, Sell Sole is that effort to take advantage of what is already there: a healthy buzz. The only problem is that the music, overall, isn’t encompassing enough to do that. Before I talk about the issues, I should say that the mixtape has its positives. The biggest draw is the production and Dej Loaf’s approach to it. . This creative combination leads to nicely done tracks like “Me U & Hennessy”, “We Be On It”, and “Ayo”. Even further, the use of autotune is used as a tool to keep her singing/rhyming that more attractive. So, one should take note of the positives that this project possesses. Nonetheless, there are some concerns with the musical approach. For one, Dej Loaf’s rhyme style is basic. Thus, this is keeping her music from growing into something beyond what it is already. Added to the fact that she uses plenty of auto-tune, it may seem that she has a lot of growing to do lyrically. As nice as Dej’s music may be, improvement is still a room that needs occupancy. Since auto-tune and dope hooks are the norm today, people will love Sell Sole. Dej Loaf has that department covered. But, she needs to attain more for the sake of her career and her growth. Dej Loaf’s buzz is there and the popularity is gaining ground. Still, she needs to establish her rhyme style and let herself grow into a more well-rounded lyricist.
