Many of us go to work only for the paycheck. We drag ourselves out of bed, day in and day out, no less than 5 days a week. Having to deal with co-workers, customers, and of course the boss, eventually becomes a daily nightmare. On top of that, the rush hour traffic make you want to yell “FORGET THIS!” before even making it halfway to the job. Regardless, whether by city transit or a car, we wake up each day to “make the donuts.” Unfortunately, as much as we would like for our paychecks to cover all bills and help pay off debt, they don’t. One of the reasons we can’t climb up out of our financial hole is the amount of money we spend just to get to and from work! Data recently discovered by Global Workplace Analytics shows that 50 million U.S. employees would rather work from home. Why? Because it is a great way to save money. Americans that live in states like D.C., New York and Maryland could save an average of $12, 654 per year if they could telework. That’s a lot of money, just imagine what a person could do with that. On Monday, March 2nd, the National Telework Week starts. Will your job be celebrating it? Nope. I doubt it. But, you may want to mention it to your boss. If you do, try the Telework Savings Calculator first. The calculator will allow you to input information about your car, commute, number of days you want to telework, etc. After you get your results, talk them over with your manager. Even if he/she deny your request to participate in National Telework Week, maybe you can discuss scheduling a few at-home work days in the near future. You would think with tons of emissions clogging up our ozone, companies would implement more work-life balance alternatives. No wonder the government chose to make this issue national recognition. Over 3.9 million greenhouse gas emissions are polluting the air on an annual basis. Teleworking will definitely help rectify that problem. In a minute, none of us will be able to make it to work because we’ll be too broke to buy gas or a transit card. *sigh*
