But, why did it take the plaintiff 25 years to file a lawsuit?? *side eye* According to reports, Dr. Dre and Universal Pictures are being sued for the use of the song “If It Ain’t Ruff” in the upcoming N.W.A. film, Straight Outta Compton. The plaintiff, Leroy Phillip Mitchell (aka Prince Phillip Mitchel), claims that he is the owner of the copyright owner of the 1977 song, “Star in the Ghetto.” A sample of his song was used by Dr. Dre and MC Ren in the 1989 N.W.A. song. Mitchell argues that no one from Dre’s camp or Universal contacted him to get approval to use the music. Universal, he says, went ahead and used the music in the film without his authorization. Mitchell is seeking $6 million in unpaid royalties, sales, fees, and emotional distress. Dre’s “If It Ain’t Ruff” has sold 3.5 million copies.
