A new technology is underway that will save us from criminal activity and having to remember passwords. But, one thing will be required…a selfie.

MasterCard is developing a new way for shoppers to authorize payments via a selfie instead of a password or signature. MasterCard is calling it the “next wave of technology that will change the consumer experience for shopping digitally.” The credit card company says it will roll-out the new technology in their Identity Check app. It will work as follows:

When a customer purchases a product from an online merchant that requires a verified identity, the customer’s mobile phone will receive a ‘push notification’, which will open the app and ask to take a selfie. As the customer poses for the selfie, they will be asked to “blink” their eyes in order for the facial recognition software to work. The “blink” will help prevent fraudsters from gaining access to credit by simply holding up a person’s photo.

Of course, the new technology will remove the need for password, which can be a hassle when you have a hundred of them to remember.

As of right now, the app is being tested in select locations in the U.S. and the Netherlands.
