VIDEO: Killer Mike Speaks on Importance of Teaching Kids About Money

Killer Mike, Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Big K.R.I.T., and a slew of other Atlantans gathered at Citizens Trust Bank yesterday to kick-off Black History Month. The three accompanied Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall to speak on the importance of financial literacy and supporting local businesses.

Economical empowerment is a major factor in the survival of inner cities. Citizens Trust Bank has a long history of providing the resources to help African-Americans understand how money works and ways to create wealth. The event was another extension of the bank’s legacy and opportunity to push financial literacy in the city of Atlanta.

Killer Mike talked to 11 Alive News on the importance of financially literacy with families and children.

“It starts small by you walking your child in a bank, opening a small bank account, and beginning to help them understand how to save money. The second phase of financial literacy comes in when you’re going off to college and you get that first debit or credit card that teaches you how to responsibly pay your bills on time…”

Killer Mike, Usher and others also took the opportunity to opened new bank accounts at Citizens Trust Bank.

Founded by African-American businessman Heman Perry, Citizens Trust Bank opened its doors on August 16, 1921 on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia.  CTB became the first African American–owned bank to become a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; thus becoming the first African American–owned bank to join the Federal Reserve Bank. CTB is also first and only African American–owned bank in the nation to become part of the Small Business Administration’s Preferred Lender Program.
