Last week, a New York Supreme Court judge ruled against releasing singer/songwriter Kesha from her Sony contract. At this point, Kesha is financially strapped. Luckily, she is receiving help from the unlikeliest of places. Kesha’s celebrity peers have shown their support via social media. Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, and Lady Gaga, for instance, have all tweeted their love and support. Taylor Swift, however, decided to do more than verbally show her support for the fallen singer. In an official statement to USA Today, Taylor Swift has donated a quarter of a million dollars to Kesha. “In a show of support, Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” said Tree Paine, Swift’s spokesperson, in a statement to USA TODAY. The pop star filed a lawsuit in October 2014 with claims that Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald) “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused” her for approximately 10 years. The abuse started when Kesha signed with Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records in 2005. Kesha was 18-years-old. New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich ruled against the lawsuit. Kesha will now stay in her music contract. It was revealed in court that Dr. Luke spent nearly $60 million on Kesha’s singing career. Judge Kornreich stated that “you’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry.” Music contracts, regardless of how much money is invested or made off of the artist(s), are decimated all the time. It’s unclear why the judge would rule against letting Kesha out of her contract. Anyway, kudos to Taylor for looking out for her fellow artist!
