It seems like yesterday when King debuted its EP to the world. It took the internet, and R&B world, by storm. Yet, this was 2011. It is now 2016 and their fans are still looking for the west coast trio to release a full length album. Now that the album is finished, We Are King picks up where The Story EP left off: achieving greatness through beautiful vocals and self-produced synth heavy rhythms. Knowing that a lot of people were unfamiliar with their past work, all of the three songs were repackaged on the CD with full blown extensions. With that noted, all three of those songs are just as great with longer instrumentation. “Supernatural” and “The Story” extend their tracks in the beginning (and some at the end for the former). Meanwhile, “Hey” gets a lift up and spread toward the end of the song. This allows newer listeners to become fully engulfed into their sound. The newer songs are just as audibly contagious as the older material. “The Greatest” is a synthesized anthem that champions and Olympians should use as theme music. “Oh, Please!” makes use of dreamy soundscapes and harmonies to make the song work. With “Mister Chameleon,” the trio allow themselves to tell a story of “falling in love with a man of too many shades” with references to colors, hues, and shades. It needs to be noted that their newer songs were delicately created to be just as great as their previous material. We Are King is the perfect beginning of a month dedicated to love. Since it is February, people should soak in this debut album from a group of self-actualized women making music they believe in. It is no accident that the album is as great as it is. This is further proof of what happens when a group makes the music they want to make for fans that want to hear it. The end result this time: a strong contender for R&B album of the year.
