If you sample Marvin Gaye’s music, be ready to go to court. Like Robin Thicke and Pharrell over “Blurred Lines,” next up on the copyright infringement chopping block is Ed Sheeran. The family of co-writer [Ed Townsend] of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” has filed a lawsuit against Ed Sheeran for the unauthorized sampling in his song “Thinking Out Loud.” Townsend’s family says that Sheeran performed the song numerous times even after he’d been warned about copyright infringement. The lawsuit also names “Thinking Out Loud” producer Jake Gosling, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Atlantic Records, Warner Bros., song co-writer Amy Wadge, and others. Townsend’s family is seeking a jury trial and damages. Check out Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” and Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” below. Any similarities??
