John Legend is adding another notch on his production belt with a new series based on Black Wall Street. Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. and Tika Sumpter will be creating a series that explores the history of Black Wall Street, which was located Greenwood Oklahoma. The all Black community surfaced in the 1900s and became well known for their ability to create wealth and be economically independent. However, White rioters saw this as a threat and completely burned down the entire community. Over 300 Blacks died in the riot and 9,000+ homes and business were destroyed. Mike Jackson, of Get Lifted, tells Deadline “We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic. Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.” Get Lifted also produced the hugely popular, Underground series, Southside With You (a film about the Obamas), and Turn Me Loose (an off-Broadway production). The pilot for Black Wall Street is in its early stages. If picked up by a network, the show could air in 2018.
