Google open the doors of their first tech lab aimed at enriching the lives of Black and Latino youth. ‘Code Next’ is located in Oakland, California near the Fruitvale area. The 1500-square-foot space was built in collaboration with MIT Media Lab, The Unity Council and Kurani design. Harlem, New York is the location of the next Code Next facility. It is scheduled to open in 2017. But, kids can attend classes at Google’s headquarters in NYC. Code Next is free for participants. To participate, individuals must be nominated by any partner organization (i.e. Black Girls Code, local middle schools, etc). The program’s curriculum includes classes on computer science (CS) concepts. According to Google, Black and Latino students are deprived of CS education in schools. Code Next will fill in that gap and create opportunities were these students can explore and prosper in the field of technology.
