Over the years, artists such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West spoke out against the highly-coveted Grammy awards ceremony. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Frank Ocean joins the evolving list of creatives who aren’t falling for the hype. Frank Ocean – who has two Grammys under his belt – says he will not be attending the ceremony in February 2017. Although successful, Frank even withheld his most recent album, Blonde, from being submitted to the Grammy committee for consideration. The Channel Orange singer believes that artist like him are under represented at the Grammys and that the voting system is behind-the-times. “That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.” “I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.” Frank, however, is reveling in the fact that he is now his own boss when it comes to music.
