The 2016 Soul Train Awards left a lot to talk about after airing last night on BET and Centric. The awards show showcased outstanding performances and blog-worthy moments as executive producer and host, Erykah Badu, took us all on a Soul, R&B, and Hip-Hop journey through time. This year, the most trophies were awarded to Beyonce, which included Album/Mixtape of the Year, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best R&B/Soul Female Artist. Other notable winners of the evening were Kanye West featuring Teyana Taylor (Best Dance Performance for “Fade”), Chance the Rapper (Best New Artist), Anderson.Paak (Centric Certified Award), Maxwell (Best R&B/Soul Male Artist), Kirk Franklin (Best Gospel/Inspirational Song for “123 Victory”), and Fat Joe and Remy Ma (Rhythm & Bars Award). The highlight of the night, however, were the performances by Brandy, Dru Hill, and Teddy Riley. The much well-deserved Lady of Soul Award was presented to Brandy by the beautiful Jill Scott. Following the presentation, Brandy showed us all why she’s still one of the best singers in the game, with a plethora of hits. The audience was amazed when Brandy performed “Almost Doesn’t Count,” “What About Us,” “Full Moon,” “I Wanna Be Down,” “The Boy Is Mine,” “Talk About Our Love,” “Have You Ever,” and “Sitting On Top Of The World,” which featured MA$E. Dru Hill covered several of their chart-topping 90s R&B jams like “Tell Me,” “In My Bed,” and “Beauty.” Lead singer Sisqo also hit the stage and performed his platinum hit, “Thong Song.” Grammy award winning producer Teddy Riley took to the stage to accept the Legend Award. Afterwards, Riley called on Doug E. Fresh, Bobby Brown, Tito Jackson, Wreckx-N-Effect and Guy to perform a medley of his hits, which included “My Prerogative,” “Rump Shaker,” “Remember the Time,” and more. Other performances were included in the show from D.R.A.M. and Erykah Badu (“WiFi”) and Anderson .Paak and BJ the Chicago Kid (“Waters”). Also, the show couldn’t be complete without the second annual Soul Cypher, featuring Tyrese, Ne-Yo, Angie Stone, Gladys Knight, and Erykah Badu.
