Interscope Records announced today that their newest signee is none other than West Coast rap legend, Ice Cube. Over two decades ago, Ice Cube became known to rap fans while in the group N.W.A, creating the wave of gangster rap music on stage and in the studio. He later started his own label, Lench Mob Records, and to-date has sold over 10 million albums. “We are thrilled to announce that Ice Cube has joined the Interscope family. He’s obviously one of the legendary figures in hip-hop…that’s a massive statement on its own, but he’s so much more than that. Cube has an incredible body of work, and as a fan I’m honored to welcome him to the label,” states John Janick,Chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M. Interscope’s announcement is timely in that, on June 9, Ice Cube will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of Death Certificate, one of his most controversial projects. To celebrate, Cube and Interscope will re-release a Death Certificate: 25th Anniversary Edition with original songs and three new songs, “Only One Me,” “Dominate The Weak,” and Good Cop, Bad Cop.” “Originally released on October 29, 1991, and produced by OG Cube cohorts, Sir Jinx, and the Boogiemen (DJ Pooh, Bobcat, and Rashad Coes), the incendiary LP, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and sold over 5 million copies worldwide, takes a potent look at life in South Central through the eyes of one of reality rap’s greatest and grittiest storytellers.” Twenty-five years later, Death Certificate’s political and social stance is even more relevant concerning today’s issues. “I only hope that yound millennials feeling powerless in the ‘hood’ can channel their own anger and frustration by listening to this record,” states Ice Cube. Death Certificate: 25th Anniversary Edition will be available for pre-order on June 2.
