The 2017 BET Awards brought back a whole lot of memories when it comes to R&B music and why we love it so. This soulful genre of music was well-highlighted throughout the night’s festivities with reunion performances by Xscape, Tamar Braxton, and a grand tribute by New Edition. “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss-Tucker and Tameka “Tiny” Harris, of “T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle,” returned to the stage – for the first time in years – to perform with their group members, LaTocha and Tamika Scott. The ladies performed a medley of their fan favorites like “Understanding,” “Just Kickin’ It,” and “Who Can I Run To.” It’s been over 10 years since the ladies last performance. The group split in 2002, to then try again as a R&B powerhouse in 2005. After years of not seeing eye-to-eye, the ladies were at the BET Awards proving to everyone that they still go it. Tamar Braxton has a voice. There’s no doubt about it. Although some fans tried to clown her and says she was lip singing, Tamar reminded fans that the Braxton family girls are blessed with the gift of song. The “Tamar & Vince” star performed her new single “My Man” at the awards show. The song was first heard on an episode of “Braxton Family Values” and was based off of the infedility Tamar’s mother dealt with their father. Tamar was a bit “extra” with the performance, but the tune itself gives us flashbacks of how soulful R&B used to be. The grandest performance of the evening came from legendary R&B group, New Edition. For over 30 years, New Edition has delighted fans with their smooth vocals and dope dance moves. Bobby, Ronnie, Ricky, Mike, Johnny, and Ralph performed a medley of their hits, which included “Can You Stand the Rain” and “If This Isn’t Love.” To top it off, the fellas also received BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
